Hand made by professional smiths in a small factory in Sweden, Gränsfors axes are a pleasure to use. They have grace, heft and balance that reflect good design and craftsmanship.

This carving axe, with its design based on traditional Swedish carving techniques, is good for roughing large carvings and architectural work. Each axe is marked with the initials of the smith who forged it, and is fully honed, ready for use. Supplied with a full-grain leather case and an informative booklet outlining proper usage, cutting techniques and care instructions.

There are three configurations of the grind of this axe from which to choose.

Symmetrical Grind: It has a 4 1/2" edge that is with a right-handed bias, a 14 1/2" long oiled hickory handle and a 2 lb head. This is the ideal axe to select for somone who is relatively (or totally) new to carving with an axe because of its versatility.

Left Bevel Grind: It has a short bevel face on the right side of the edge, if the axe is held in the right hand with the handle down and head up. The left side of the edge has a longer, slightly concave bevel face, which provides excellent support when carving.

Right Bevel Grind: It has a short bevel face on the left side of the edge, if the axe is held in the left hand with the handle down and head up. The right side of the edge has a longer, slightly concave bevel face, which provides excellent support when carving.

According to Gransfors Bruks, Right-handed persons normally use Large Carving Axe, Grinded left side, and Left-handed persons normally use Large Carving Axe, Grinded right side, while the longer slightly concave bevel face come near the wood and therefore provides excellent support when carving. However, the determination of a left grind vs a right grind for a right-handed user or a left-handed user is very personal and we are well aware that differeing axe users contradit this recomendation. If you are uncertain of which axe to select, we recomend the symmetrical grind to get you started and help you determine which makes the most sense.
